A Boy Brings Them Together...

shayna arrived at the hospital and went towards the children's ward where her father worked as one of the head nurses there. although he was a big and strong man, he has always been a gentle giant. he had a soft heart for children and making sure they were well. everyone in the hospital loved shayna's father because he was one of the rare male nurses that truly cared. even the lady nurses all looked up to him like a father figure. shayna was proud of her father because to her, there is nothing and no one better than her old man. that's why she always takes time to visit him in the hospital when he was working and she made many friends with his young patients.

"hey papa!" shayna called as she saunted into the ward.
"shayna. why are you here? aren't you suppose to look for a job?" Mr. Fong said as he hugged his daughter.
"i did. i just came from an interview. i came to bring you your lunch. you know you cannot work without food," shayna said, passing him a packet of his favourite noodles.
"you silly girl. so how was your interview?"
"well, not really good. in fact i walked out of the interview. that company doesn't deserve me. i'm too good for that lowdown creep that's hiring. he's such a pervert!"
"a pervert? did he do anything to you?"
"did anything to me?! of course not! your daughter is much smarter than you think alright!" both of them laughed and joked as Mr. Fong ate his lunch.

suddenly, Natasha, one of the nurses under shayna's father came running towards him frantically. "Mr. Fong! Colby's entered the emergency ward. his blood pressure is very high and he needs your assistance now!" Mr. Fong jumped up to his feet and started to panic. he quickly turned to Natasha and asked her to find Dr. Chong. He then gave an apologetic smile to his daughter and went on his way. shayna was comforted and knew her father loved her a lot. she then decided to follow him to see if she could be of any help there. she's always good with comforting kins.

shayna walked down the hallway towards the emergency ward. indeed there was a sick child inside and her father was tending to him. shayna looked around to see if his parents were around. apparantly, they weren't around... that was kinda odd. finally, her father came out of the ward, his perspiration rolled down his cheeks.

"shayna? what are you doing here?"
"I thought i could come and help out... you know, comfort the boy's family but i don't see his family around."
"i see. well, if you didn't know, colby's father is a very rich and successful man in Singapore. i don't think they'd arrive at such short notice. besides, colby just had a reprecussions of his old illness. all he needs is some rest."
"but colby needs his family now. i can't believe they just can't take time off and spend it with their son." shayna complained as she folded her arms in dismay.
Mr. Fong shook his head, with a smile plastered on his face. "my dear daughter. not every child that comes here have a wonderful family like you. you must understand that people are different and so are their family conditions. not everything goes your way, you know."
"i guess... but how can they leave him like this when he needs support?" shayna complained and whined.
"then maybe you should go to his bed and maybe cheer him up a little. i'm sure his parents should be on the way. if you can make a good fiference in his life, i don't see why you aren't. remember what i told you on the lessons of love."
"i know dad. i will do it right away," shayna said with a pleased look on her face as she walked up towards colby's ward.

she walked into the giftshop at the hospital and bought some robots and toys that she thought colby would like. she also bought him some chocolates and sweets. the owner of the giftshop noticed her unusual choice of products and asked what she was doing.
"I'm gonna visit one of my dad's patients. this boy's parents are too busy for him, so i'm gonna be a good samaritan and cheer him up." shayna said with a smile on her face.
"that's nice to hear. send him my regards." the owner said, throwing in a few more sweets and chocolates.
"thanks so much. i'll see you around!" shayna said, taking her gifts and went on her way.

she walked up to ward 11B. wow. a private ward for such a small boy. his father should be really rich. shayna straightened up her clothes and then made sure she had a smile on her face. she knocked on the door and let herself in. she saw a frail looking boy staring out through the window. he was very quiet and looked as though he didn't notice her come in.

"hi colby?" shayna said, trying to get his attention. the boy looked up and she saw the sweetest pair of eyes. colby smiled. at least he looked friendly enough.
"hey. i'm shayna. i saw you looking so bored that i wanted to share something with you." the boy stayed silent but his eyes told her that he was expecting something wonderful. "well, i hope you like playing with these kinda of things..."
shayan drew out the robots from her bag and immediately, colby's face lit up and his smile was brilliant.
"cool! i love them!" he finally said, sitting up and grabbing hold of one of the robots, fixing and assembling them. shayna smiled and felt good that she could bring happiness to someone's life.
"do you want to play with me?" colby asked, passing her one of the robots. shayna agreed and they started having one robot fight after another.

colin walked up to the ward. 11B. this is it. but colby doesn't really sound all that sick. in fact colin could hear him laughing and having fun inside the room. he was expecting a totally different scenerio. hmm.. something was very weird. colin opened the door and to his surprise, he saw colby playing with some toy robots and this girl playing with him... god. it couldn't be. it's shayna... that brat. colby and shayna's eyes all darted to colin when he came into the room.

"kor!" colby shouted and opened up his arms, asking for a hug.
"hey you bugger. feeling better already?" colin said, pulling colby close to him.
"uh huh. this cool sister bought me some new robots. aren't they cool?" colby replied, showing off one of the robots.
"yeah they are. did you thank her for them?" colby nodded and returned to the robots.

colin looked at shayna for awhile. shayna was starting to wonder what was wrong with his eyes.
"i just wanted to thank you for keeping my brother company." colin finally said. "it's really amazing that we keep bumping into each other so many times today."
"tell me about it," shayna said as she rolled her eyes and fold her arms across her chest.
"look. i'm sorry if i have offended you just now at the office. i hope we have no hard feelings for each other. on the account of my brother, i hope we can be friends."
shayna watched as colin stretched out his hand for a handshake. she hesitated for awhile but remembered what he father told her. that no two people are the same and if she could make a difference, she should do it.
"alright. friends. but don't expect me to be all nice and friendly after what has happened today. change comes slowly."
"yeah i understand. you wanna grab something to eat later? my treat. since you have already spent so much on colby."
"alright but don't you push your luck on me."
"who dares."
as they were about to walk out of the ward, Mr. Fong came to check on colby. he had a pleasant surprise seeing his daughter with a handsome stranger. he smiled, obviously pleased.

"erm.. hi dad." shayna said, sounding a little embarrassed. "this is my father. he is the head nurse here." she explained to colin.
"oh hi uncle. it's nice to meet you. i'm colin tan. colby's older brother."
"i see. so where are you heading off to now shayna?"
"well... colin and i are going to grab something to drink. that's all."
"alright. be back home for dinner alright?"
"yes papa. see you back home."
shayna dragged colin out of the room and away from her father before he started to ask anymore stupid questions.
